Showjumper Andres Rodriguez, the individual silver medalist from the 2015 Pan American Games, has died following a car accident in Wellington, Florida.
Sophie Walker, an amateur rider and the wife of professional trainer Brian Walker, died at the scene of the accident. The accident took place at the Palm Beach Polo and Country Club at approximately 3:25 a.m.
Rodriguez, 31, was an accomplished rider and represented Venezuela at the 2015 Pan American Games. He also won the individual silver medal behind McLain Ward and earned his place as an individual at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro.
Rodriguez was based in Paris during the summer season and for the winter, returns home to Florida with wife, Clementine Goutal for the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington.
He trained with legendary rider and coach Eddie Macken, and his top horses include Caballito, Darlon Van Groenhoveand and Fifty Fifty 111.
Andres made a big impression at the RDS Horse Show when sporting the Irish Rugby Jersey in 2015 and will be fondly remembered by the people of Ireland and many more across the world.
The Andres Rodriguez Official Facebook Page posted: ”It is with the deepest sadness that we have to announce that Andres Rodriguez and his passenger Sophie Walker suffered a tragic car accident on Monday morning in Wellington, Florida. Circumstances of the accident are still unclear.
Sophie walker passed away in the accident and despite all efforts Andres passed away a few hours later. We are lost for words. Our prayers and thoughts go to Sophie’s family, to Andres’ wife And family. RIP Chepito. 💔”
