Dougie Douglas is heading to the United States after a record breaking price at auction for 1.4 million euros.

As a youngster, ‘Dougie Douglas’ was sold to Graham Smith in September 2009 for €5,800. Last night, he went back under the hammer as a seasoned grand prix horse and was sold for a record breaking price.

The Irish Sport Horse ‘Dougie Douglas’ has set a new Irish record auction price by selling for €1.4 million at the Goresbridge Supreme Sale of Showjumpers in Co Wexford last night. The 10-year-old liver chesnut gelding, by Ard VDL Douglas out of the High Roller dam Neills Girl, was purchased by Irish agent Barry O’Connor for an American client.

The Nations Cup show jumper, competed by Holly Gillott and jointly owned by the rider and Graham Smith has represented Great Britain in a number of Nations’ Cups in recent years.

Dougie Douglas was the first horse to be auctioned and quickly opened at €400,000. The bids came fast and climbed to €900,000 rapidly. From €1 million upwards, the crowd watched anxiously as bids continued to grow. As the hammer fell at €1.4 million, the whole room erupted with applause.
